Earthquake Crisis in Myanmar

I know that many of my readers have already heard and seen the tragedy and crisis caused by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, in particular, in the central city of Mandalay. As if the people of Myanmar haven’t gone through enough already, struggling with a four-year civil war, the hunger, trauma and dislocation that it is causing, and recovering from COVID-19 under a military dictatorship that controls the hospitals and health care system. Now they must cope with the unimaginable destruction of a 7.7 magnitude earthquake. This quake also hit nearby Bangkok Thailand. I’m not going into detail here about the unfolding of the aftermath of this earthquake, which you can read about in the mainstream media. I’m just going to list the relief organizations that are already working in Myanmar that you can donate to so they can provide direct relief in the form of food, shelter and medical services.

Buddhist Global Relief: Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi’s international relief organization already has a program set up in Myanmar: https://buddhistglobalrelief.org/the-growing-food-crisis-in-myanmar-a-dire-consequence-of-military-oppression/

Better Burma: This organization has been working on hunger relief and education in Myanmar for over a decade; https://www.betterburma.org

Advance Myanmar: is founded and run by a team of people with decades of experience of the humanitarian and human rights situation in Myanmar/Burma. They provide humanitarian assistance at times of crisis, but also assist local communities to promote positive change to tackle the root causes of those crises.

As I learn of more organizations that are providing direct relief to the people of Myanmar, I will post them here.

BKK is not ‘nearby’ to Mandalay. It’s at least 800 miles (over 1300km). That is testimony to the power of a 7.7 quake, but also to the building standards in Myanmar more than in Thailand. Chiangmai, a lot closer to the epicenter, registered no widespread damage and no fatalities. The only serious damage in BKK was a down high-rise under construction. Likely more unseen damage in both areas.

Look, sir, Myanmar borders Thailand; most refugees from Myanmar end up in Thailand. I would be remiss if I did not at least mention it; a dozen people are dead or injured in Bangkok. Southern China was damaged as well. Let’s focus on what’s important and make a donation to help people in Myanmar.
