In the interest of advancing the Mental Liberation Front, I invite you to watch this lecture by Mark Fisher on “The Crisis of Cybertime”, in which he discusses extreme social-economic precarity. We are forced to compete against each other as “entrepreneurs of the self”, in a culture of extreme individualism. At the same time, we are completely isolated from each other, with only electronic avatars as our “friends.” These are the socio-economic conditions of neoliberalism. Our entire psyches and social lives have been shaped and conditioned by ‘cyber-capitalism’ and social media, which he calls “techno-fentanyl.” The themes and insights Fisher presents very much echo those by Byung Chul Han, and others writing in the field of cybernetics, Bifo Berardi and Jean Beaudrillard.
