Quest for Freedom

The following is a poem by an anonymous author from Myanmar, speaking to the struggle for freedom in Burma, published in the Insight Myanmar blog. Please visit Better Burma/Insight Myanmar to learn more about the current struggle for freedom and democracy in Burma, and hear the voices of people living out this revolution.

I.

There is no greater freedom

Than the liberation of the mind

From the chains of thought and worry

That keep us bound and blind.

To be free of our mental prisons Is to find true inner peace

And to know the joy of living In the present moment, free.

II.

But there is another kind of freedom

That’s just as important, too

It’s the freedom to live and be

Without fear or oppression

To have the right to speak and act

Without being silenced or put down

This is the kind of freedom

That the people of Myanmar are fighting for today.

III.

It’s a long and difficult road

To political freedom and democracy

But the people of Myanmar are walking it

With courage and hope in their hearts.

one day, their dreams will be realized

And they’ll be able to live in peace

With the knowledge that they’re free

At last, free at last.
