SNL’s ‘Woke’ Jeans Sketch

Ok, maybe you’ve had enough of “woke” consciousness, (derived from either evangelical Christian or Buddhist culture); and whether something “matters” or not. Both of these politicized words have been drilled into our collective consciousness in the last two years, spammed over countless Tweets and Facebook postings, to the point where they are becoming empty cultural signifiers. But not empty enough, to put a dharma twist on it. SNL has turned the ‘woke’ meme into the ultimate empty signifier as Levi’s Wokes Jeans, deconstructing and spoofing the culture of the millennial generation that spawned it. When a youth-oriented pop culture show like Saturday Night Live spoofs “woke”, does it still matter?
