Vince Horn, co-founder of Buddhist Geeks, comes out of a long period of silence in Buddhist Geekland to tell us what’s been happening in his world. Vince lets us in on the profound disillusionment he experienced with ‘lineage’ Buddhism, calling it a ‘love-hate’ relationship. But he also lets us know where Buddhist Geeks is going in the future, and in some sense where western Buddhism may be going.
I have been through this same profound disillusionment myself many times, perhaps sooner than Vince did. What I found disappointing was Buddhist organizations, not the dharma itself. So I was determined to find my own way through the dharma, and to combine it with other wisdom teachings and practices to create my own dharma bybrid, another phenomenon that Vince identifies. I have had all the same critiques and disappointments that Vince had, and I agree with just about all his insights into the course of Buddhism in the West.

As a queer Theravada practitioner, I have also had a difficult relationship with Buddhism, especially in a lineage that can be really hostile to queers and transgender people. I’ll be talking more about the latest turn in my journey in a future post.
