The following interview with Aung Kaung Myat in Himal South Asia Magazine reveals that ethnic resistance to the the military junta in Myanmar is growing and unifying. This includes, for the first time, rebel Bamar Buddhist groups, from the majority population, that have joined ethnic minorities in various regions against the military junta. Second, Myat said they are witnessing groups of soldiers defecting from the military, and as many as 8,000 more security forces have expressed a desire to defect. If this pattern continues, it could lead to collapse of the military regime. The articles explains the complex history of ethnic resistance to the military junta, and to other pro-democracy movements in Southeast Asia.
