Update: Myanmar Flower Protest

Two great moments in the ongoing revolution in Myanmar:

First, Myanmar Now: Sanctions by the US and European Union have left the Myanmar military scrambling for money. According to Myanmar NOW, since the US and EU imposed sanctions on key army-controlled banks and oil companies, over half a billion dollars of oil and gas money is being held in foreign bank accounts out of the military’s reach. The junta now faces significant obstacles in receiving oil and gas revenues.

Working together, we successfully lobbied for these US and EU sanctions on the military. We also used our consumer and shareholder power to force oil giants Chevron and TotalEnergies to withdraw from Myanmar. Together, we’ve built a powerful campaign to end the rule of the Myanmar military.

Second, The Flower Protest in Myanmar on June. 19, 2023 brought protesters into direct confrontation with the military regime. Why were they protesting with flowers? to show solidarity with jailed leader Aung San Suu Kyi , who often wore flowers in her hair. In case you think this is some kind of “hippy love-in”, you might read the following article:

Arrested – or beaten – for wearing flowers to mark Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday

Many protesters, mostly women, were arrested – or beaten – for wearing flowers to mark Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday. “And the military clearly saw the “flower demonstration campaign” as a sign of rebellion, arresting dozens who participated.”
