Burma, Buddhism and the Junta

Wai Yan Tun #MilkTeaAlliance

One of the most difficult issues for Buddhism and the MTA (Milk Tea Alliance), yet also the most promising, is the impact of the movement for Democracy in Burma/Myanmar against the military fascism of the Junta. A young organizer from Burma, Wai Yan Tun, explains how the Junta exploits Burmese Buddhism to support its regime, the genocide of the Rohingya, and the violent crackdown on democracy protesters. We will be covering this topic in depth in our upcoming podcast series, “Milk Tea and Democracy.”

For years the junta have been weaving this narrative thread of a “possible extintion of Buddhism”, in order to divide ethnic lines and prevent solidarity. Sadly, the older, more conservative generation still can’t accept the fact that Myanmar is a country full of diverse ethnicities and religions. It doesn’t help that the majority of the populace in Myanmar is Buddhist, and the further majority of them believes the junta’s crap, and pushes the information around without digging deeper to find the truth. Now the junta is yet again fabricating lies that the federal army’s primary goal is to eradicate Buddhism in the name of Islam. The older generation is now given a second chance. Will they dig deeper, and find their own answers, or will they continue to believe in the junta’s bullshit, in the name of Buddhism.
